The government used propaganda posters throughout the First World War for many different reasons. For example, to recruit men for the forces, to recruit women to work, to promote a sense of togetherness and to encouraging wartime thrift. Some posters would use tragic events to motivate men to join the army such as the sinking of the Lusitania.

Recruitment posters in the Britain were especially important in 1914 as there was no policy of national service as in other European countries such as Germany and France. Conscription was only introduced in March 1916.

Posters were used by many other countries throughout the war. The collection we have at Archives+ are some of the posters used in the Greater Manchester area.
